About Scott Kuhner, Owner, Founder and Director of Insight Motorsports:
Scott Kuhner’s background is somewhat unusual. He completed 2 years at the University of Western Sydney, from 1995 to 1996, before leaving to work at VFJ Electronics. He used his university credits to help complete an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Technology at Mt Druitt TAFE.
In addition to his electrical engineering credentials, Scott is a fully qualified mechanic and member of the Institute of Automotive Engineers. It is this mix of electrical and mechanical knowledge which separates Scott from other tuners.
Scott Kuhner started his electronics company, Insight Services, part time whilst working for an electronics company and went full time in 2000. The Insight Motorsports story began when a young and enthusiastic Scott Kuhner began tuning race cars for others.
In 2002, inspired by the positive feedback which he received, Scott invested in an empty factory at Arndell Park which now serves as the home of both Insight Motorsports and Insight Services. A Dyno Dynamics 2WD dynamometer was installed in 2003.
In 2007, the in-house dynamometer was upgraded to a Dyno Dynamics 4WD type. Also in 2007, the workshop was upgraded to include a mezzanine with room for air conditioned offices, workspaces and more space to store parts.
So, Scott, when and how did you start tuning cars?
I was working for an electronics company which specialised in the production and service of currency handling equipment. When the company I was working for was taken over, I decided to start my own business doing the same thing. I always had a passion for cars and speed, so I decided to use my electronics knowledge and my engine knowledge by developing my skills with engine management systems.
How did you go about doing that?
I put an FJ20 turbo engine in my first car, a Datsun Stanza, and installed a second hand Haltech E6.
How did you learn?
I taught myself how to tune EFI systems from previous carby experience, by reading books (there was no internet available at the time) and relating my electronics knowledge to mechanical knowledge. I used to borrow tuning meters. I bought a second hand laptop from a friend at uni for $400.
I was also given the opportunity to hone my skills on Rallyequip’s rally car, which competed in the Australian Rally Championship. This was their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5 – the first Evo 5 in Australia.
Is this the same car which is in the workshop?
Yes, I currently own and compete in this same car.
How long have you been competing?
A long time; I started off in drag racing before I entered rallying. My dad bought me a Stanza when I was 15 (I was not allowed a V8). I have been drag racing the Stanza since I was 17. It has gone from the 15 second Weber era to the 13 second FJ20 era to the 9 second FJ20 race engine era. I have since taken a break to go rallying but there is hopefully still a faster era with the new chassis still to come.
When did you enter rally competition?
I did a couple of rallies in 2004. In 2006 and 2007, I did a full season of AMSAG (Australian Motor Sport Action Group). In 2006, I was the Class C (under 2L class) champion. In 2007, I was the Modern champion with my Mitsubishi Lancer VR4. In 2008, I competed in various events with my Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5 – both CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motor Sport) and AMSAG events.
What are your future racing plans?
I am looking to run the Evo 5 in the CAMS NSW championship again.
